Sapele grows in the rainforests of West and Central Africa, where the trees can reach huge heights. The wood looks a lot like real mahogany, with a warm reddish-brown color that gets richer as it ages. Cut into squares, it shows off a tight grain and a soft shine that woodworkers love.
These are 2 inch by 2 inch square turning blanks. The small size is great for pens, bottle stoppers, short spindles, tool handles, and other small turning jobs. The wood spins clean on the lathe and takes a smooth finish with very little sanding. Many pieces show a wavy ribbon stripe that pops once you add oil or wax.
