If you only know maple, Purpleheart will surprise you. It is much harder and much heavier, and it does something maple never will. The fresh-cut wood turns from brown to a deep purple as the air hits it. These turning blank squares give you that color in a small, easy size to work with.
Each blank measures 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches square. That size is a good fit for pen blanks, small bowl blanks, knobs, bottle stoppers, and short spindle turning. The wood is dense and stiff, so it holds crisp edges and takes a smooth cut on the lathe. A sharp tool and a steady speed give you the best finish.
- Size 1.5 inch by 1.5 inch square turning blanks
- Sold as a single Purpleheart blank
- Good for pens, knobs, stoppers, and small spindle work
- Dense, hard wood that polishes to a shine
The grain runs mostly straight with a tight, even feel, and now and then you get a soft wave of figure that catches the light once the purple sets in.
