Padauk grows in the forests of central and west Africa, and it is one of the most colorful woods you can buy. When it is fresh cut, the wood glows a bright orange-red. Over time the color settles into a deep, warm brown. This set gives you two boards, each one 3/4 inch thick and 5 inches wide, so you have enough stock for a real project with a little left over.

These boards work well for trim, small boxes, cutting board strips, inlay, and accent pieces. Padauk is a hard, dense wood, but it still cuts and shapes clean with sharp tools. The grain is mostly straight and a bit open, so it sands smooth and takes glue without fuss. The bold color makes it a favorite for adding a pop next to lighter woods like maple.

To keep that rich color looking its best, finish your piece with a UV-blocking topcoat and store it out of strong sunlight.
