Mahogany is a real favorite for turning. The grain is straight and even, so the wood cuts smooth and does not tear out much. It is a medium-weight hardwood that holds fine detail on the lathe. The color is a warm red-brown that gets deeper and richer as the wood ages.

You can turn it, carve it, or sand it down by hand. It takes oil and wax with no fuss and sands to a soft, even surface.
