Butternut wears a soft, warm tan color with a light brown grain that runs in long, easy lines. It looks a lot like its cousin, the walnut, but much paler and lighter. This pack gives you four blocks, each one 2 inch by 2 inch, ready for carving or for the lathe.

Butternut is a soft hardwood, so it cuts with very little push. New carvers love it because the knife glides through and the grain rarely fights back. It is great for whittling, relief work, spoons, small bowls, and clean turning squares on the lathe. The wood is light in weight too, so finished pieces feel nice in the hand.

One tip before you start. Butternut is soft, so a razor sharp tool leaves a much cleaner cut than a dull one that tears the grain.
