Wenge wears a deep chocolate-brown color with near-black grain lines that run straight and bold. That dark, two-tone look is what makes it stand out on a finished bowl. This set gives you two blanks, each a full 2 inches thick, so you have stock for a real bowl with some depth.

Wenge is a dense, heavy hardwood. It feels hard and solid in the hand, and it holds a clean edge once the cut is made. The grain has a slightly coarse, open texture, so the wood reads as rugged and strong. It turns well on the lathe and takes shape without much tear-out when your gouge is keen.

One quick tip. Wenge dust can be sharp and the open pores love to grab, so sand up through the grits and wipe clean before any finish goes on.
