If maple feels too hard and slow to cut, basswood gives you the opposite. It is one of the softest hardwoods you can buy. The grain is tight and even, with very few knots, so your tools glide through it without a fight. That is what makes these turning blanks so easy to work, even for new turners.
Each square measures 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches. The pale cream color is plain and smooth, with almost no figure to pull your eye away from the shape you are cutting. Basswood also carves clean by hand, so it works on the lathe and off it.
- Size 1.5″ x 1.5″ square stock
- Sold as one turning blank
- Wood is real basswood, soft and light
- Good for small spindles, pens, and carving practice
Chuck one up and turn a set of light, easy honey dippers or a small bottle stopper to get the feel of your gouges before you move to harder stock.
