Push a knife into basswood and it gives way like butter. This is one of the softest carving woods you can buy, with a fine, even grain and almost no growth lines to fight. That makes it easy to slice in any direction, which is why so many hand carvers and whittlers start here.
This set gives you four blocks. Each one measures 2 inches by 2 inches by 6 inches, so you get a long, square stick that is great for figures, small spoons, comfort birds, and practice cuts. The pale cream color shows your knife marks well, so you can see every plane and detail as you work.
- 4 carving blocks per set
- Each block 2″ x 2″ x 6″
- Soft basswood with a tight, even grain
- Good for whittling, figures, and detail carving
For the cleanest cuts, keep your knife or gouge razor sharp. Basswood is so soft that a dull edge will crush the fibers and leave fuzz, but a keen blade and light sanding will bring up a smooth, paintable surface.
