White Ash Turning Blanks for Sale

White ash is the same wood used to make baseball bats. That tells you a lot. It is strong, it bends without breaking, and it holds up to hard use. These same traits make it a great wood to turn on a lathe.

Where White Ash Grows and What It Looks Like

White ash grows across the eastern part of North America. It is a tall hardwood tree with a long, straight trunk. That gives us clean, even wood for our turning blanks.

The heartwood is a light to medium brown. The sapwood is much paler, almost white. The grain is bold and straight, with wide growth rings you can see and feel. The look is open and ringed, much like oak.

Strength and Feel on the Lathe

White ash is a hard, dense wood. It is tough but still springy, so it takes a hit without cracking. On the lathe it turns well and cuts clean when your tools are sharp.

The open grain means you may want a grain filler if you want a glass-smooth top. Sharp tools and a steady hand give you crisp lines and a nice surface right off the gouge.

Good Projects for White Ash Blanks

These blanks work for many lathe projects. Turn bowls, plates, and platters that get used at the table. Make spindles, chair legs, stool legs, and tool handles that need to take a beating.

Smaller blanks are great for pens, bottle stoppers, and other handheld items. The bold grain gives each piece a clear, striking look that people notice.

The Finish White Ash Takes

White ash sands down smooth and takes stain in an even way. Oil, wax, and clear coats all sit well on it. When you buff it out, the light wood and strong grain lines come alive with a clean, bright shine that stays good looking for years.
