What Pen Blanks Are

A pen blank is a short, square piece of wood made for the lathe. Most are about 3/4 inch by 3/4 inch and around 5 inches long. That size fits the most common pen kits. You drill the blank, glue in a brass tube, then turn it round and shape it.

They work for more than pens. Turners use the same blanks for seam rippers, bottle stoppers, key chains, and small handles. One blank goes a long way.

Wood You Can Pick From

Hardwood matters here. The wood is dense and hard, so it cuts clean and holds a sharp edge on the shape. That gives you crisp lines and a smooth surface with very little sanding.

Grain and Color

Tips for Turning Them

Go slow on your first few. Take light cuts and keep your tools sharp. Sand up through the grits, then add your finish in thin coats. A simple wood pen can shine like glass with a little care.

One thing to know. These woods change with age. Cherry darkens to a richer red over the months, walnut mellows to a soft glow, and maple warms to a light honey tone. So the pen you turn today will only look better as the years go by.
