Padauk Turning Blanks for Sale

Our Padauk turning blanks give you a solid chunk of bright, bold wood ready for the lathe. The squared size is right for bowls, spindles, pens, and small handles. You get enough wood to rough out a shape and still have room to true it up clean.

Where Padauk Comes From

Padauk grows in central and west Africa. It is sometimes called African Padauk. The trees are large, so the wood comes in wide, clear pieces with few knots.

Because the grain runs straight and even, each blank turns smooth and predictable. That makes it a good pick for both new turners and old hands.

Color and Grain

The thing people love most is the color. Fresh cut Padauk is a bright orange-red, almost like a hot coal. Over time it deepens to a warm reddish brown. The grain is open and straight, with a coarse texture that still finishes well.

This bold color means you do not need stain. The wood does the work for you, and one piece can be the star of a whole project.

Hardness and How It Turns

Padauk is a hard, dense wood. It rates around 1,725 on the Janke hardness scale, so it stands up to daily use and holds a crisp edge on detail work. Even with that hardness, it cuts well on the lathe when your tools are sharp.

It sands to a glassy feel and takes oil and wax finishes with ease. The dust can be fine, so a mask and good airflow help while you work.

Best Projects for Padauk

These blanks are great for bowls, pens, bottle stoppers, spindles, and tool handles. Turners also use Padauk as an accent next to lighter woods, where the red really pops.

What sets Padauk apart is that living, fiery color. Few woods give you this much punch straight off the lathe, and that is why it stays a shop favorite.
