Where Osage Orange Grows

Osage Orange is a small native tree that grows across the central and southern United States. Farmers once planted it in long rows to make living fences and windbreaks. People also call it hedge, hedge apple, or bois d'arc.

The trees often grow short and twisted, so clear, straight boards are not always easy to find. That makes good Osage Orange lumber a treat for woodworkers who want something different.

Color and Grain

Fresh cut Osage Orange is a bright golden yellow. It is one of the most colorful woods you can buy. Over time, with light and air, it slowly darkens to a warm amber or brown.

The grain is straight to a little wavy, with a fine to medium texture. Sanded and finished, the surface takes on a smooth glow that shows off the deep yellow tone.

How Hard It Is

This is one of the hardest and toughest woods grown in North America. Its Janka hardness sits around 2,620 pounds, which is harder than hickory, hard maple, and white oak. It is dense and heavy in the hand.

Because it is so hard, sharp tools and a slow pass work best. The wood also turns and carves well once you respect its strength.

Common Projects

Woodworkers use Osage Orange lumber for furniture, cabinets, and trim where they want a bold yellow look. It is also a top pick for tool handles, mallets, and fence posts that need to stand up to hard use.

Osage Orange resists rot and bugs better than most woods, so it holds up well outdoors and lasts for years. If you want a board that stays strong long after the job is done, this is the wood to reach for.
