Where Merbau Comes From

Merbau grows across the warm parts of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. You will find it in places like Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and nearby islands. It is also called kwila or ipil in some spots.

The tree grows tall and wide, so the boards can come in large, clean sizes. That makes it a smart pick for big projects where you need long, solid pieces.

Color and Grain

Fresh-cut merbau starts out yellow to orange-brown. Over time it darkens to a deep red-brown that many woodworkers love. The color is rich and warm and only gets better with age.

The grain is mostly straight but can be a little wavy or interlocked. You will often see small flecks of yellow or gold mineral deposit in the pores. These bright specks give merbau its own look that no other wood quite matches.

Hard and Tough

Merbau is a heavy, dense hardwood. It resists dents, scratches, and rot, so it lasts a long time even with daily use. The wood is stable too, which means it moves very little once it is dry.

Working and Finishing Tips

Merbau cuts and shapes well, but keep your blades sharp because the wood is so hard. The interlocked grain can tear out, so take light passes and go slow on tricky spots.

When you finish, wipe the boards with a clean cloth first. Merbau holds a natural oil and can bleed a reddish color, so let it dry fully before you seal it. A simple oil finish brings out that deep red glow and protects the wood for the long haul.
