Leopardwood Lumber for Sale
If you like the look of oak but want more flash, leopardwood is a fun step up. Plain oak has a clean grain. Leopardwood has bold spots and flecks all over the face of the board. That look gives it the name. It turns a simple board into something people stop and stare at.
Where Leopardwood Comes From
Leopardwood grows in the warm forests of South America. Most of it comes from Brazil and nearby countries. It is part of the same wood family as lacewood, and the two look a lot alike.
Because it grows far away and is cut in smaller amounts, it is more of a specialty wood. That makes each board feel a little special when it lands on your bench.
Color and Grain
The wood has a warm reddish brown to medium brown color. The fun part is the flecks. When the log is cut on the quarter, big ray flecks show up across the face. They look like little spots and dashes, kind of like the spots on a leopard.
The grain is mostly straight. The flecks shift in the light as you move around the board. No two boards look the same.
How Hard and Strong It Is
Leopardwood is a hard and heavy wood. It is much harder than oak or maple, so it stands up well to daily use. It is dense and stiff, which makes it strong for table tops and shelves.
That hardness means you want sharp tools and a slow, steady hand. The grain can chip if you rush it. Sharp blades and light passes keep the face clean.
Getting Started on the Bench
Leopardwood lumber boards are a great pick for furniture, cabinets, and small woodworking jobs. Think tables, drawer fronts, box lids, and trim where you want the spots to show. A clear finish makes the flecks pop and brings out the warm color.
Pick a board, take your time milling it, and let the grain lead the way. Start with one accent piece and you will want to build the rest of the project around it.
